West Haven council chairman turns himself in to New Canaan police

DeCrescenzo turned himself in this morning to New Canaan police on a warrant for his arrest on two charges of first-degree larceny.According to New Canaan police, Chase Bank security notified them on Aug. 6 that three customers' accounts were the target of fraudulent activity. DeCrescezno worked at Chase's New Canaan branch, although a staff member told the Stamford Advocate that he no longer works there.Police said an investigation revealed DeCrescenzo's activity showed he embezzled $172,000 from two accounts and used a third account to filter the money. Both victims are New Canaan residents, police said.DeCrescenzo, 36, was being held on $300,000 bond and was to be brought to Superior Court in Norwalk for arraignment.The warrant was signed last week and DeCrescenzo had n迷你倉t been located until he turned himself in today. New Canaan police listed his address as 9 Apple Tree Terrace, West Haven.DeCrescenzo has been a close political ally of Mayor John Picard's and ran with him on his slate for an at-large City Council position in the Democratic primary Sept. 10. He is listed on the Democratic line in Tuesday's election.Under the city charter, if Picard were to leave office before the end of his term, DeCrescenzo, as council chairman, would become mayor.
