He initially was characterized as in critical condition, but a Maine State Police commander said Thursday morning at a press conference that Day's condition had been upgraded to stable. He is receiving treatment at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where a spokeswoman said Thursday morning she had no information on his condition.Todd Gilday, 44, of Belfast is accused of fatally shooting Arsenault and has been taken into custody. More charges may be forthcoming, police said."We believe the suspect Gilday knew at least one of the people in the home," Christopher Coleman, the commander of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit, said at the news conference outside the Belfast Police Station. "It's very important to us to find out how he knew the people."Coleman said it was too early to release information about a possible motive for the killing and shooting, and that police investigators want to speak to anyone who might have information. They are interviewing family members today and the investigation remains in the early stages, he said.Police focused on Gilday after responding to two 911 calls reporting the shootings. They spoke with people in the house, including Day, and learned that Gilday was a suspect.Police notified officials in three other states where Gilday has ties while they were searching for him Wednesday night.Gilday went to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport sometime overnight to check himself in, Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.Gilday was arrested without incident at about 8 a.m. at the hospital and charged with murder. He was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast then transferred later Thursday morning to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. Officers from the Maine State Police, Knox County Sheriff's Office, Rockport Police Department and Rockland Police Department were at the scene. A cruiser was parked in back of the Nissan Altima. His car was seized by police and taken to the state police crime lab in Augusta for examination, McCausland said.Police initially had sought help from the public in locating Gilday, who was considered armed and dangerous. Shortly after they released information to media outlets, officers received a tip that he was at the hospital.Belfast police and the Waldo County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene of the shooting at 11 p.m. Wednesday. A neighbor of the victims said he first heard arguing late Wednesday night in the rundown yellow house on Waldo Avenue, then a gunshot, then a woman screaming.Although he and his family were accustomed to hearing arguments and fighting in the house next door, Wednesday night was "pretty intense" and much worse than usual, said he and his wife, who did not feel comfortable sharing their names.
