Under the deal, UASC will buy five of the largest cargo ships ever made, each able to carry 18,800 twenty-foot container units (TEU), along with five with a capacity of 14,500 TEU. UASC was set up by the governments of Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE in 1976 to improve trade links with the rest of the world.OMAN RECEIVES FIVE TECHNICAL OFFERS FOR RAIL PROJECT MANAGEMENT CONSULTANCY: Five international engineering and consulting firms have submitted technical offers for Oman's 'consultancy services for project management' contract, Muscat Daily has reported. The tender was floated on June 16 and it received interest from around 29 international companies, but only five submitted technical offers until Monday, the last day for submission. The contract is expected to be awarded by the end of the year, said director of the sultanate's railway project, Abdulrahman al Hatmi. "We will try to close the process by the end of this year or early next year, as we look to award the design-and-build contract next year," al Hatmi said.DOT TO LAUNCH MAWAQIF SYSTEM IN AL AIN: Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport (DoT) has announced the Mawaqif paid parking system will be introduced in the city of Al Ain soon, Gulf News has reported. The department has completed all requirements to start the service, which will be free of charge during its first phase. However, it has not said when the system will be fully effective and how long the first phase will last.RTA SETS NEW TIMINGS FOR TWO DUBAI BUS ROUTES: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced two public bus routes in Dubai will follow new timings from September 1, Gulf News has reported. The new timings apply to Bus No 31 from Gold Souq Bus Station to Oud Al Muteena, via Airport Terminal 2 and Etihad Mall, and Bus No 43 from Gold Souq Bus Station to Dubai Festival City, via Muraqqabat and Airport Terminal 1.INTELLIGENT TRAFFIC LIGHTS FOR 34 AD INTERSECTIONS: Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport (DoT) has started installing and operating integrated and intelligent traffic lights to control the movement of vehicles and pedestrians at 34 intersections in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Gulf Today has reported. The new system is aimed at to improving traffic flow by determining the time required for a car to wait at the traffic signals according to traffic movement at the place.RTA TO AUCTION SPECIAL NUMBER PLATES TODAY: Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced another group of special number plates is to go on offer in its 22nd online auction, Khaleej Times has reported. The three-day auction, beginning on Tuesday, will have on offer 300 numbers from categories M, N, L, K, J and I, the RTA said.TRANSAD TO LAUNCH NEW SILVER TAXI SERVICE IN WESTERN REGION: Abu Dhabi's Centre for Regulation of Transport by Hire Cars (TransAD) has announced it is set to launch the taxi service (silver) in the Western Region, starting from September 1, Wam has reported. Taxis will be operated by the same companies in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, which have conducted professional training for their drivers to provide the service in the Western Region. "The new service addresses the needs of people in the Western Region as well as visitors and tourists," said director of franchise and licensing at TransAD, Mohamed Al Hosani. "We will evaluate results of the service during the first phase, following which we will decide the number of taxis needed to ensure sufficient services."WORK ON HARAMAIN RAILWAY PROGRESSING ON SCHEDULE: Mohammed Al-Suwaiket, president of the Saudi Railway Organisation (SRO) has said work on the Haramain Railway project that links the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah is progressing as planned, Arab News has reported. "We are monitoring the works of contractors in different locations by conducting field inspections and checking on their reports," Al-Suwaiket said. The new 450km line is expected to carry around 160,000 people a day and even more during the Haj pilgrimage. They will be transported on a fleet of 35 new high-speed trains.DUBAI'S WATER TAXI LAUNCHES FAMILY PACKAGES: Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has introduced special family packages as well as scheduled daily trips for the emirate's water taxi service, Gulf News has reported. "We are trying to have tailor-made packages for our customers as the water taxi is a desired marine transport means," said director of the Marine Department at the RTA's Public Transport Agency, Baha Al Qedra. The family trips, hired from any stations on the creek or from Jumeriah, should be ordered 24 hours in advance, while the four daily trips are scheduled on two fixed routes from Marsa Dubai, Khor Dubai, Jumeirah Open Beach and Dubai Marina.JEDDAH TO HAVE DRY PORT TO SOLVE JIP CONGESTION: The National Committee for Transport at the Council of Saudi Chambers has said a dry port away from the city centre will be established to solve congestion issues at the Jeddah Islamic Port, Arab News has reported. "The dry port will speed up the process of getting the goods out of the port, help carry out procedures more quickly and ease the burden on carriers transporting the goods to warehouses," said deputy chairman of the committee, Saeed Al-Bassami. The system will enable visitors with a GCC visit visa to entering all GCC countries. The probe is in response to complaints by Filipinos in the kingdom about undelivered 'balikbayan boxes' to their relatives in the Philippines, which is in violation of PSB Administrative Order No. 6 series of 2005, according to the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh. Six agents in the UAE, six in Kuwait, an agent in Oman and one in Bahrain are also under investigation, the PSB said.OMAN TO OPEN SHORTER ROAD TO SAUDI BY 2014-END: The Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) said that the new road, which links the sultanate with Saudi Arabia, is expected to be completed by the end of 2014, Times of Oman has reported. The road is the second border outlet of the sultanate after the road that links it with the UAE and is shorter by 800 km than the existing road, said the OCCI.UAE'S NEW LAND TRANSPORT LAW TO GO INTO EFFECT ON SEPTEMBER 1: The UAE has announced the new Land Transport Act is set to go into effect from September 1, Arab News has reported. Under the new law, which sets the rules of carrying passengers and goods between the UAE and other countries, no land transport business maybe practiced without getting a license from the National Transport Authority (NTA). The license applicant must be a UAE citizen and the transport vehicle should be equipped with safety gear and should satisfy all technical conditions stipulated by the authority.$1BN MUSANDAM ROAD PROJECT ATTRACTS 31 FIRMS: Oman's Tender Board has said global construction giants are among the 31 companies that have submitted their credentials seeking prequalification to participate in a tender for a contract to build a 65km section of one of the sultanate's most expensive road projects, Times of Oman has reported. The new Diba-Lima-Khasab, expected to cost an estimated $1bn, is an arterial carriageway featuring a series of massive road and wadi bridges, as well as some of Oman's longest tunnels across the strategically important Musandam governorate in the far north of the country.MUSCAT TO EXPAND ROADS: The municipality of Omani capital, Muscat, is seeking an expansion for the main road in Al Mazare Town, which links it with other towns including Al Ghubairah, Al Jazeer, Al Hisn, Al Qaryah and Munsfat, Times of Oman has reported. The first stage will involve the extension of road link, which connects Al Ghubairah town to Wadi Dayqah Dam. The second stage will seek the expansion of roads that connect Al Malawas, Al Jazeer, Al Hisn, Al Qaryah, Munsfat and Al Dhahir with Wadi Dayqah Dam. The road will also be expanded to connect neighbouring towns including Alyaa, Fiq and Wadi Arbayeen.DP WORLD IN RACE FOR INDIA'S JNPT EXPANSION DEAL: India's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has said eight firms, including DP World, Adani Ports and Essar Ports, have evinced interest in building the fourth terminal at the country's largest port, PTI has reported. "We opened the request for qualifications yesterday and a total of eight companies have applied," said JNPT deputy chairman, N N Kumar. It will take about 10 days to scrutinise the documents submitted by the companies, according to Kumar, after which it will be decided if they qualify to bid or not. Following the qualification, the selected candidates will have to take a security clearance from the Union home ministry, he added.OMAN AWARDS 16 DEALS TO ENHANCE SULTANATE-WIDE TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES: Omani transport ministry has awarded 16 contracts, worth OR182.22m, for road, civil aviation and ports projects, Muscat Daily has reported. Of the total, OR159.09m has been allocated for roads, OR12.59m for the aviation sector and OR10.53m for the port sector.EGYPT'S ENRA INCURRING LOSSES DUE TO HALTING RAILWAY SERVICES: Egyptian National Railway Authority (ENRA) has said it is losing EGP5m daily, due to the disruptions of service, with EGP30m losses recorded in the last six days, Daily News Egypt has reported. Last Wednesday, ENRA stopped all trains, causing substantial losses to the transportation service, said ENRA deputy head of financial affairs, Talaat Kassab. "Egypt's train movements were completely halted between Cairo, Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt," he said, adding that it remains unclear when the trains will resume normal operation.QDB SAYS RAIL PROJECT OFFERS SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITIES: Qatar Development Bank (QDB) has said the country's upcoming rail project offers local companies and Qatari entrepreneurs a significant number of business opportunities, the Peninsula has reported. The state-run lender sees $110m in business opportunities in providing the pre-fabricated tunnel linings for the 80km-long of metro tunnels and $200m in the manufacturing of protection walls. The bank also foresees another $480m opportunity in the construction of deep foundations for buildings and a $3.6bn opportunity in project management services sector.BAHRI STUDYING PLANS FOR 'WORLD CLASS' FACILITY: The National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Aramco and Singapore's Sembcorp Marine to conduct a feasibility study for a maritime yard project in the kingdom, Reuters has reported. Bahri, which gave no value or location in the kingdom, said the yard would be a "world class" facility. The study comes after preliminary assessments for the project completed by Aramco and Sembcorp Marine.
